This week, I celebrated Biscuit’s fifth birthday. Who is Biscuit? Why, he’s only the family dog. He’s an adorable, playful, and rambunctious bundle of fur that I really enjoy hanging out with. Like all of my family members, he supports me and inspires me to be a better person. For that, I’m always grateful for him.
I remember getting Biscuit when I was in my early years of college. At the time, I was pretty irresponsible for reasons I’ve alluded to before. I was back home after having nearly failed college due to a lack of motivation. My mother, acting on impulse, saw a wonderful puppy named Biscuit on the Internet and knew she had to have that dog. One of our old dogs was also named Biscuit, so she felt that getting this Biscuit was fate.
When we first got Biscuit, he was a very small puppy. He was also rather whiny too. During the first few nights, when he had to lay down in the dog kennel in the kitchen, he’d whine and moan all night. Somebody had to be by his side to comfort him, so either myself or dad had to sit next to him for most of the night. We did this for a little while until we wised up and realized that we could just take his dog kennel and put it into our bedroom.
But getting that dog really helped me to gain that sense of responsibility. There was now a living being that I loved that depended on my care for its survival. Sitting next to the tiny puppy dog to prevent him from crying, I gradually came to realize the importance of responsibility. From then on, whenever my parents went out of town, they’d leave the dog-sitting to me. I always had Biscuit to take care of. He’d keep me company, and I’d keep him well-fed, active, and happy.
Biscuit makes for rather good company because he is very vocal. He has a variety of barks, moans, growls, and howls that he uses depending on his mood. For instance, whenever he knows that my mother and father are about to be home, he starts whining a very high-pitched voice. By contrast, his angry barks are very deep, as if he were a much bigger dog than he was. He also has a more spirited bark, which he makes when he wants you to drop what you’re doing and play with him. He also has a special bark when he sees someone at the door. Biscuit is less of a guard dog and more of an alarm dog, barking loud enough for the entire house to hear him.
Biscuit loves jumping on the bed and the couch and laying on it. Though he sometimes scratches the furniture on accident, he’s never had the urge to tear it apart. From a young age, we’ve given him toys that allow him to satisfy his biting urges. However, he tore apart all of the toys that we gave him.
Biscuit is an affectionate and protective dog. He tends to follow people around the house. To most human beings, he does a good job getting along with them. He’ll easily lay his head on their laps as they pet him. However, Biscuit dislikes other dogs and will not stop yapping at them when he sees one. This is mostly due to not being taught how to interact with other dogs during his formative years. While having to deal with his misbehavior around other dogs in public is a bit annoying, his over the top reaction to them is also kind of funny. He just barks and barks, but when the other dog gets near him, he runs away from them like a scaredy-dog, no matter how big they are.
Speaking of loud barking, Biscuit also barks when he wants attention. He’s a jealous dog when it comes to receiving attention from others. Whenever he sees one of his family members hugging, he starts barking at them, as if to say “let me in on this too!” Whenever I go outside with him and I’m on the swing, he starts barking at me, as if to say “don’t play on the swing, play with me!” And when he is in a lackadaisical mood, he’ll lay down besides me.
As I type this line, Biscuit curls up next to me. He like to hang his head off of the arm of a chair while the rest of his body lays to the side of me. He truly is man’s best friend.
